AMENDMENT TO THE ATHABASCA OIL SANDS AREA

Recent drilling within and adjacent to the shaded areas on the attached map (Attachment 1) has indicated the presence of potential oil sands resources beyond existing oil sands area (OSA) boundaries. Therefore the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) has changed the current Athabasca OSA to include the area within Townships 86 to 100, Ranges 1 to 3, and Townships 70 and 71, Ranges 2 and 3.

The Athabasca OSA encompasses all strata between the top of the Viking Formation and the base of the Woodbend Group, as declared by Order No. OSA 1.

As a result of these changes, when an application is received the Department of Resource Development will issue an oil sands permit to the holder of any current petroleum and natural gas (P&NG) agreement that lies within the area affected by the boundary change. PROPOSED CHANGES TO INTERIM DIRECTIVE 99-1

The amendment to the Athabasca OSA boundary will consequently result in a change to the Athabasca OSA boundary identified in EUB Interim Directive (ID) 99-1: Gas/Bitumen Production in Oil Sands AreasApplication, Notification, and Drilling Requirements to match that shown on Attachment 1.

Additionally, the EUB intends to revise the Wabiskaw and McMurray Gas Production Application Area boundaries identified in ID 99-1 as shown on Attachments 2 and 3. Operators should advise the EUB by October 31, 2000, of any concerns about the proposed application area revisions.

Direct any questions regarding this information to the EUB Resources Branch at (403) 297-8218.
